Terminology

APO: Apochromatic correction using AD elements. Mostly used on tele primes and zooms.
HS-APO: APO with higher-speed electronics and gearing. Some of the long tele primes were released after the other APO tele primes were updated to HS-APO, so they don't have a non-HS predecessor. Also, the latest SSM lenses are again only called “APO”.
(D): Distance encoder, used for ADI flash, matrix metering in MF mode and DOF display. All D lenses currently also feature a wider focus ring. With some the focus ring does not rotate in AF mode (see table).
With Sony lenses the (D) specifier is no longer part of the official name, but not all lenses have the D function. Check the “D function” column to see which lenses have it and which don't.
DT: “Digital Technology”, image circle adapted to APS-C digital SLRs. Can not be used with full-frame film cameras. Can be used on full-frame digital cameras in crop mode.
FE: Full-frame E-mount lens
G: Minolta's and Sony's high quality lenses, featuring a large maximum aperture, AD elements, high build quality, circular aperture, aspherical elements, floating focusing.
GM: Sony's high quality lenses, featuring a large maximum aperture, AD elements, high build quality, circular aperture, extreme aspherical elements, floating focusing.
OSS: Optical Steady Shot, image stabilization in the lens (currently only in E-mount lenses).
SAM: In-lens micro motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters. Standard SAM is not compatible with Direct Manual Focus (DMF), unless noted otherwise.
SSM: In-lens ultra-sonic motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters.
T*: Carl Zeiss high performance coating
xi: Motorized zoom controlled by the body or by the photographer (power-assisted manual zoom). Auto-zoom only works on xi bodies with assorted chip cards. Manual zoom must be used on bodies after the xi series. Does not work on pre-xi bodies.
ZA: Zeiss-designed lenses for Sony.

GREAT CHART!!! I have seen and printed off a few charts like this over the years, notably one from Minolta, but this is the best I've seen.

On another subject, I have been hearing lately about design for full frame DSLR, not just in terms of covering the frame with light, but the angle of light impingement at the corners. The story goes that the design of digital sensors makes them lossy when light comes from an angle far from 90 degrees. If this is true, then a column asserting designed for digital full frame may be in order in the near future. Also, the DT catagory being unsuitable for most compatable cameras for this mount might merrit a column just for that feature.

Current lenses work just fine on DSLRs, microlenses on the sensors take care of the problem. If that changes in the future I will update the table. The restrictions of DT lenses are already mentioned in the terminology section at the end of the page.

Amaaaazing website and information. Thanks.. :-) But, i'm sad as well, realised that no macro lens (100mm or less) with Internal Focus feature for my Sony camera, wanna put it in housing for underwater photography. Anybody know whether Sony/Sigma/Tamron will launch it?

I guess what you want is a macro lens that doesn't extend. Well, the 200/4 Macro doesn't extend, but you probably won't use it in an underwater housing. As for shorter macros, you'll probably have a hard time finding one that does not extend. I have no information about the future plans of camera makers.

First i was surprised and happy that all Min AF Lens ever build, will work on my Alpha, that not all of the Lenses are worth buying was clear, but not wich ones are good.
You helped me to sort them out and find the right ones for me.

Soweit ich sehe, sind alle Links auf externe Tests in dieser Tabelle gültig. Eine Preisinformation möchte ich hier nicht einführen. Selbst Listenpreise unterscheiden sich von Region zu Region, ganz zu schweigen von Straßenpreisen und Gebrauchtpreisen. So eine Information wäre permanent veraltet.

A comment and a question. First, I just received a 24-105mm Minolta AF lens and find that the focus ring does not rotate when the lens is autofocusing. The chart says that it does. The question, Since the Minolta and Sony lenses are so similar, do the lens hoods interchange? My Minolta came without the hood and I want to buy one for it. Will the Sony hood fit?

The table says it does not rotate. You probably have looked at the wrong column. While I have not made a side-by-side comparison of the hoods, I'm quite confident the hoods are interchangeable. After all, Sony has not changed anything else.

The Vectis system was discontinued long ago. The RD3000 was the first and last DSLR of the Vectis system. I don't know any adapter to any other system.

There is no A mount 1000mm or 1600mm lens by Minolta. I think there is a >500 mm mirror lens for the SR mount by Minolta, but these are not the topic of this page.

The lens is not discontinued. See Sony Japan, for example. Unfortunately errors on Sony websites are common.

NEX cameras have a different lens mount (E-mount). You can't use A-mount lenses directly. See the F.A.Q. list for more details.

There are two problems with the C-mount:

The registration distance is very short. The lens could not focus to infinity without extra optical elements in the adapter. It's a challenge to maintain image quality with these.
The image circle of C-mount lense is much smaller than even the APS-C size sensors. You'd get strong vignetting.

That's why there are no such adapters for the A mount.

All of the macro lenses listed above can be used on your camera. The macro lenses of that range (90 mm to 105 mm) from Sigma and Tamron also can be used (in their A-mount version, of course). You can not use DT lenses (Minolta, Sony), DC lenses (Sigma) or Di II lenses (Tamron). Also see the F.A.Q.!

I am a SRT man but recently I purchased two Minolta 7000i cameras which have five pins/conectors in the throat of the cameras & the lenses.
I'm looking for a 70 300mm lens to fit the am cameras.
Can I fit eight pin conector lenses to my 7000i Do I have to stay with five pins, obviously I will not be able to operate the lens to it's fullest potential but with the same capabilities as a five pin lens.
I have consulted my "local" camera shops as the cameras are quite old, the staff of the shops were not that old, I'm 70.

This is correct, it is a full-frame lens. The design is the same as that of its predecessors, which existed already in the film era.

I have bookmarked this site for future use/reference. I find these studies and collection from individual so very useful. Generally there isn't any bias or addenda in the efforts. And because of this charting; it allows me to make excellent decisions as to proper use and to purchase a specific lens.

I too have many lenses in my collection mostly Minolta SR/MC/MD series... and I have Minolta Alpha's too.

If by “new Alpha cameras” you mean those with E-mount, then yes, you need an adapter. I recommend the LA-EA4 (see here). For cameras with A-mount you do not need an adapter.

With this budget you're mostly limited to second hand lenses. The 70-210/4 that I once used was not overly sharp. I consider the “beercan” over-hyped. It's also quite big, and maybe a bit long on the A57 for street and portrait. You can try to get the Sony DT 55-200 SAM, Sony DT 50/1.8 SAM or Sony 85/2.8 SAM used. At least the latter two have a really high optical quality for their price.

Love this survey, great amount of work has gone into it, very well done. I have been mulling over what very expensive lens to buy for my secondhand Sony ar7 and i realised I should go back and try some Konica/Minolta lenses. I have just bought the Minolta 35-105 af lens and it is terrific. Nearly bought the new e-mount 24-240 for £700 and then read a review of the 35-105. Optics are on a par with each other(the Minolta may be even better) and the Minolta lens cost £40!!! Wish I had thought of this earlier. That leaves me £660 to buy more lenses. Of course I have to use an a-mount to e-mount adapter, but even they are coming down in price. Thanks again.

The SSM Motor of Sony Alpha 70-400/4-5.6 G first generation lens is defect. Sony says now it can`t repair the SSM because the are no spare parts available. Does someone know if it possible to replace the SSM with that from the current lens?

I think if this was possible Sony would have told you. Also, the AF is one of the main improvements of the second version, so I'd guess they are incompatible.
