This is supposed to be a tech data sheet of all Minolta/KonicaMinolta/Sony Alpha lenses. My goal is to list all lenses, including older versions, and to list more tech data than the official brochures, eg. whether and when the filter turns.

Lenses are color-coded as follows:

Current lens
Discontinued lens
Announced lens

Brands are highlighted as follows:

Minolta, Konica Minolta
Sony
Carl Zeiss

Whenever there's a “?” or empty space in the table, I do not know the data. If you have that specific lens, or when you have a model not listed yet, and you can provide the data, please contact me and I'll update the table as soon as possible.

Data for announced products should be considered preliminary. Exact data often isn't known until after the actual release. You should not rely on data for announced products to be correct.

Terminology

APO
Apochromatic correction using AD elements. Mostly used on tele primes and zooms.

HS-APO
APO with higher-speed electronics and gearing. Some of the long tele primes were released after the other APO tele primes were updated to HS-APO, so they don't have a non-HS predecessor. Also, the latest SSM lenses are again only called “APO”.

(D)
Distance encoder, used for ADI flash, matrix metering in MF mode and DOF display. All D lenses currently also feature a wider focus ring. With some the focus ring does not rotate in AF mode (see table).
With Sony lenses the (D) specifier is no longer part of the official name, but not all lenses have the D function. Check the “D function” column to see which lenses have it and which don't.

DT
“Digital Technology”, image circle adapted to APS-C digital SLRs. Can not be used with full-frame film cameras. Can be used on full-frame digital cameras in crop mode.

FE
Full-frame E-mount lens

G
Minolta's and Sony's high quality lenses, featuring a large maximum aperture, AD elements, high build quality, circular aperture, aspheric elements, floating focusing.

OSS
Optical Steady Shot, image stabilization in the lens (currently only in E-mount lenses).

SAM
In-lens micro motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters. Standard SAM is not compatible with Direct Manual Focus (DMF), unless noted otherwise.

SSM
In-lens ultra-sonic motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters.

T*
Carl Zeiss high performance coating

xi
Motorized zoom controlled by the body or by the photographer (power-assisted manual zoom). Auto-zoom only works on xi bodies with assorted chip cards. Manual zoom must be used on bodies after the xi series. Does not work on pre-xi bodies.

ZA
Zeiss-designed lenses for Sony.

WONDERFUL STUDY.
HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE AS WELL TO HAVE IT FOR APS CAMERAS LIKE S1 AND S 100 .ALSO THE DIMAGE RD 3000 LENSES SEEM TO LOOK THE THE APS SETS.

Thank you so much for this list. It helps so much to know which of the lenses work with the Alpha. We are considering purchasing the Alpha to complement our current lineup of Cameras. We use exclusively Nikon for shoots, but the focus in low light for the D300 is not good when coupled with the 70-200 2.8 lens. Your page helped us with a solution.

Thanks again,

Bill

GREAT CHART!!! I have seen and printed off a few charts like this over the years, notably one from Minolta, but this is the best I've seen.

On another subject, I have been hearing lately about design for full frame DSLR, not just in terms of covering the frame with light, but the angle of light impingement at the corners. The story goes that the design of digital sensors makes them lossy when light comes from an angle far from 90 degrees. If this is true, then a column asserting designed for digital full frame may be in order in the near future. Also, the DT catagory being unsuitable for most compatable cameras for this mount might merrit a column just for that feature.

Thanks again for this wonderful chart.

Michael Hohner answers:
Current lenses work just fine on DSLRs, microlenses on the sensors take care of the problem. If that changes in the future I will update the table.

The restrictions of DT lenses are already mentioned in the terminology section at the end of the page.

This is a great archive of sony/minolta lenses, but how about including third party lenses? Such as from tamron, sigma and tokina? Between them, they have quite a few a-mount lenses available.

Jennifer
Michael Hohner answers:
This is currently not planned. Please refer to Dyxum for third-party lens information.

Amaaaazing website and information. Thanks.. :-)

But, i'm sad as well, realised that no macro lens (100mm or less) with Internal Focus feature for my Sony camera, wanna put it in housing for underwater photography. Anybody know whether Sony/Sigma/Tamron will launch it?
Michael Hohner answers:
I guess what you want is a macro lens that doesn't extend. Well, the 200/4 Macro doesn't extend, but you probably won't use it in an underwater housing. As for shorter macros, you'll probably have a hard time finding one that does not extend. I have no information about the future plans of camera makers.

Dankeschön, Darling Dankeschön.!!!

Thanks a lot for this list, it helps me realy after buying my "First Sony" to get some good Lenses. It is my first SLR since i get 1986 the 8 Year old Konica from my Father.
First i was surprised and happy that all Min AF Lens ever build, will work on my Alpha, that not all of the Lenses are worth buying was clear, but not wich ones are good.
You helped me to sort them out and find the right ones for me.

Hallo,
Klasse Seite.

A comment and a question. First, I just received a 24-105mm Minolta AF lens and find that the focus ring does not rotate when the lens is autofocusing. The chart says that it does. The question, Since the Minolta and Sony lenses are so similar, do the lens hoods interchange? My Minolta came without the hood and I want to buy one for it. Will the Sony hood fit?

You site is a phenomenal source of information, Thank you for our efforts.
Michael Hohner answers:
The table says it does not rotate. You probably have looked at the wrong column.

While I have not made a side-by-side comparison of the hoods, I'm quite confident the hoods are interchangeable. After all, Sony has not changed anything else.

Unbelievable Minolta/konica/Sony/Zeiss lens data sheet! I have seen several offerings with varying depths. This sheet is the most concise chart I have seen to date. Simply put this chart has all the data any new Sony Alpha owner (such as myself) needs to build up an amazing arsenal of lenses. Thank You Mr Hohner;~)

Might be a dumb question, but am I correct in assuming that all these lenses will in fact fit on any current Sony DSLRs?

Basically, yes. Also see the F.A.Q. list.

Hi. Great website - many thanks. I have an RD3000 with a collection of lenses. These are interchangeable with the Vectis APS cameras. Are these lenses usable with the Sony DSLRs (or any current DSLRs)? Thanks.
Michael Hohner answers:
The Vectis system was discontinued long ago. The RD3000 was the first and last DSLR of the Vectis system. I don't know any adapter to any other system.

I have a A70 sony and have been seeking either the 1000mm or the 1600 mm lens Minolta made. Anyone know where I can find one?
Michael Hohner answers:
There is no A mount 1000mm or 1600mm lens by Minolta. I think there is a >500 mm mirror lens for the SR mount by Minolta, but these are not the topic of this page.

Since I purchased my Sony A350 in May of this year, I've been looking for some good Minolta lenses, since I found that they would fit my new DSLR. I've found a few, and now thanks to all your hard work, I have the resource for finding more! Thank you so much for doing all your research & publishing it on the Internet for allowing others to benefit.
One question: do you plan on including any of the old Minolta MD lenses in the future?
Thanks again!!
Michael Hohner answers:
These pages are limited to the AF mount systems. I have no plans to add MD lenses here.

The lens is not discontinued. See Sony Japan, for example. Unfortunately errors on Sony websites are common.

I just received a Sony Nex 5 camera, and my sister gave me some Minolta lenses she thought would work with this camera. They are a 60-300 mm and a 50 mm macro (1:1 ratio). Both have the Minolta AF mount. I'm pretty new to the photography world, so for some reason, I cannot get the lenses to attach to the camera. Am I missing something or am I mistaken that these lenses do indeed fit the camera? If you can help, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks
Michael Hohner answers:
NEX cameras have a different lens mount (E-mount). You can't use A-mount lenses directly. See the F.A.Q. list for more details.

I want to add my thanks to that of others for this comprehensive list.
I have purchased a Sony NEX-VG10 video camera and am hoping some of the Minolta lenses will work on it with the Alpha adapter.
Thanks also for letting me know that Sony will be offering a telephoto E Mount lens in 2011.
#27: Comment posted by Ricardo Sousa on January 21st, 2012 - 05:22:41 PM:
I would like to know if there is a converter from c-mount lens to an alpha mount.
I recently bought a Sony alpha 65 and I have a nice Sony TV Zoom lens with C-mount that I would like to use. The problem is that I can´t find any adapter to alpha mount. There is adapter from C-mount to almost every other mount, but to A-mount I couldn´t find anything.
My question is: It is possible to use that len in my camera? What kind of adapter/ converter should I use?
I really hope anyone can answer me.
Michael Hohner answers:
There are two problems with the C-mount:
  1. The registration distance is very short. The lens could not focus to infinity without extra optical elements in the adapter. It's a challenge to maintain image quality with these.
  2. The image circle of C-mount lense is much smaller than even the APS-C size sensors. You'd get strong vignetting.

That's why there are no such adapters for the A mount.

I am looking for an F=100mm macro lens which will fit an old Minolta 7000 camera body and I presume that lens should have an A-mount. Do you know of any suitable lenses? Perhaps I could compromise slightly on focal length. I intend to do butterfly and insect photography.

Thanks for your help Steve Dobson
Michael Hohner answers:
All of the macro lenses listed above can be used on your camera. The macro lenses of that range (90 mm to 105 mm) from Sigma and Tamron also can be used (in their A-mount version, of course). You can not use DT lenses (Minolta, Sony), DC lenses (Sigma) or Di II lenses (Tamron).

Also see the F.A.Q.!

Is there any information available about the interface of the A-mount-lenses? What is the pin assignment of the 5 respectively 8 contacts of the lenses and which information is shared on each contact?
Michael Hohner answers:
I don't have this information.

I am a SRT man but recently I purchased two Minolta 7000i cameras which have five pins/conectors in the throat of the cameras & the lenses.
I'm looking for a 70 300mm lens to fit the am cameras.
Can I fit eight pin conector lenses to my 7000i Do I have to stay with five pins, obviously I will not be able to operate the lens to it's fullest potential but with the same capabilities as a five pin lens.
I have consulted my "local" camera shops as the cameras are quite old, the staff of the shops were not that old, I'm 70.
Many thanks for your help.
Michael Hohner answers:
That's answered in the F.A.Q. list.

I think there is an error because if I select full frame lenses I can find Sony Alpha 75-300/4.5-5.6 that I think is a APS-C lens. Are you sure is a FF lens?
Michael Hohner answers:
This is correct, it is a full-frame lens. The design is the same as that of its predecessors, which existed already in the film era.

Hallo Michael,
in der Liste fehlt noch die Lens-ID des Sony Alpha DT 18-55/3.5-5.6 SAM II.
Sie lautet wie die vom Vorgänger 00055.
Das Gewicht beträgt lt. meiner Waage (ungeeicht...) netto (also ohne beide Deckel) 222g, mit beiden Deckeln (Front Sony wie gelie´fert, Rück Minolta) 245g.
Vielen Dank für Deine Mühen mit den ganzen Daten!!!

Excellent effort and remarkable site.

I have bookmarked this site for future use/reference. I find these studies and collection from individual so very useful. Generally there isn't any bias or addenda in the efforts. And because of this charting; it allows me to make excellent decisions as to proper use and to purchase a specific lens.

I too have many lenses in my collection mostly Minolta SR/MC/MD series... and I have Minolta Alpha's too.

So, I say to you -- Thank you!! for the efforts to collect this information and bravo to you for taking the time to post this site.
